Spandrel glass is glass which has been rendered opaque with a water based lead-free opacifier. It is typically used to conceal areas from direct viewing such as between the floors of a high-rise building in order to mask wires, piping, insulation etc. Solar Seal offers eight standard colors and has the ability to match almost any custom color with the use of a spectrocolormeter.
Spandrel can be manufactured to satisfy both opacity and the criteria for fallout protection. (Please note that fallout protection is a non-standard application and must be specified at time of order.) It is critical that spandrel glass be glazed against a dark background in a non-vision area. Spandrel glass is not designed for use in transoms, partitions, areas exposed to traffic flow or any other place where diffused light is a concern. Because Solar Seal spandrel glass is lead-free and contains no organic solvents, it can be handled at any stage without fear of personal or environmental harm.
When applying the spandrel to a substrate, a minimum of 1/4" airspace is required. Fiberglass or rigid insulation may be used to meet this requirement. The insulation must be foiled on two sides and factory approved before application. Out gassing from certain products like insulation and setting blocks may cause the spandrel coating to fail. This should be checked for ahead of time as well as ensuring the use of silicone setting blocks and neutral cure silicones to avoid such problems.
OPACI-COAT 300®¹ waterbased silicone spandrel coating, is typically applied on the second surface of the glass. Most applications require a clear substrate which must be heat strengthened or fully tempered due to thermal stress.
